Daniel Reyes
Editor and fact-checker
I write the thirty-four how-to guides and all fifty-one state guides, and I read every other page here before it publishes. A wrong figure on this site is mine to answer for.
Most of the job is telling drafts no. Where a draft and its source disagree, the source writes the sentence, and I have cut paragraphs I was fond of on that basis.
The habit came from a friend’s closing I sat in on years ago, to keep her company. A fee turned up that neither of us had seen on any of the sites she had read that week, and it wasn’t hidden, just old, copied off a page that had copied it off a press release nobody can produce anymore. She paid it and I have thought about it since.
So every guide carries the date its figures were last checked. Fees and terms change without anyone announcing it, and the calendar is what catches them.
If a figure looks wrong to you, email me. I have been wrong in public twice this year, and both times a reader got there first.
A little more about Daniel
In 2003 I took a job on a local paper in Sacramento and stayed eleven years, two of them covering the county recorder's office. There is a woodworking bench in the garage I bought in 2019 and have used maybe six times. Two kids, one dog. The commute is nine minutes if I leave before seven and twenty-five if I don't, and I have run that experiment enough times to be sure of the numbers.
Areas of focus
- Sign-off on every page: if I can't be shown the source, the sentence goes
- Figures, deadlines and legal claims traced to primary sources
- The source library, and the review calendar that dates every guide
